The Smith River Alliance uses the tools of advocacy, education and land acquisition to restore and protect the land, water and human resources in the Smith River Watershed. Programs of the organization include:

A Watershed Protection Program to protect and restore the watershed through acquisition of targeted land and conservation easements, advocating science-based management of watershed lands, and promoting and administering restoration projects that provide significant benefits to the aquatic ecosystems. SRA is particularly interested in projects involving multiple partners -- and in implementing projects that have both watershed and community economic benefits.

SRA works to acquire targeted parcels in the Smith River watershed. The organization works collaboratively with partner organizations on large-scale purchases, contributing the development of public support for the purchase and the funding to the effort. Examples include Mill Creek and Goose Creek. In addition, we negotiate and complete small-scale acquisitions like those required at Lake Earl Wildlife Area, and actively recruit partners for priority projects.

SRA promotes the environmental restoration of Smith River watersheds to assist in the restoration of Pacific salmon runs on the Smith to historic levels of “over-abundance.” We believe that the watersheds of the Smith River should be managed as refugia for the now battered stocks of these once abundant fish. In 2003, SRA worked on the Coho Restoration Plan and in 2004 we will launch the Lower Smith River Restoration Initiative.

SRA believes that the National Recreation Area and associated watershed lands should be managed by sound scientific principles. SRA promotes holistic, watershed, and ecosystem-based problem solving in an effort to ensure that short and long term management decisions protect the area.

SRA has provided training and coordination for Smith River Adult Trout and Salmon Surveys since 2000.

An Environmental Education Program which provides environmental education to Del Norte and Humboldt County children/youth, and stewardship opportunities for youth and adults. These programs provide education, outreach, and orientation to community members at large as well as for visiting students/classes. Education programs focus on Smith River watershed science, natural systems processes, conservation needs, and the significance of individual action and responsibility.

SRA offers a summer Day Camp for local youth at Rock Creek Ranch. The camp is co-sponsored by the Gateway Partnership Education Program and features exercises to educate diverse participatants about the natural resources available in the Smith River National Recreation Area.
