Located eight miles upstream of the confluence of the Middle and South forks of the Smith River, in the heart of the Smith River National Recreation Area, Rock Creek Ranch is the activity hub of the Smith River Alliance. The property and facilities enable the organization to stage retreats, slide shows, youth camps and workshops. RCR is a place where visitors can withdraw from the busy world for inspiration and renewal.
The fifteen-acre property has a significant amount of frontage on the South Fork of the Smith. The river in this reach features both rapids and deep pools. At the upstream end of the grounds, remnants of an old lodge — lost to flooding in the 1950's — are located adjacent to a magnificent pool. Vegetation around the old building's foundation has been cleared and the inspiring site serves as an impromptu amphitheater and outdoor classroom.
Facilities at Rock Creek Ranch include a three bedroom ranch house with a large, recently-constructed deck. On the grounds are also a garage, garden and orchard and a state-of-the art composting toilet, which serves visitors and campers using the beautiful riverside terrace at the upstream end of the property. Completed in 2008, there is also a covered Outdoor Use Area that serves as an outdoor meeting, dining and teaching area.
Recent highlights at RCR include installation of an off-the-grid renewable energy system. On July 4, 2007, phase one of the project was completed as a new solar system came online. This moment of energy independence was celebrated with a toast and a load of laundry! In November 2007, a micro-hydroelectric system came on-line.
