Our Watershed Protection Program seeks to protect and restore the Smith River watershed through acquisition of targeted land and conservation easements, advocating science-based management of watershed lands, and promoting and administering restoration projects that provide significant benefits to the aquatic ecosystems. SRA is particularly interested in projects involving multiple partners -- and in implementing projects that have both watershed and community economic benefits.
SRA works with partner organizations, developing public support and funding for projects like Mill Creek and Goose Creek. Current projects that exemplify SRA’s commitment to protecting threatened landscapes include Hurdygurdy Creek and Lake Earl Wildlife Area.
SRA promotes the environmental restoration of Smith River watersheds to assist in the restoration of Pacific salmon runs on the Smith to historic levels of “over-abundance.” We believe that the watersheds of the Smith River should be managed as refugia for the now battered stocks of these once abundant fish.
SRA believes that the National Recreation Area and associated watershed lands should be managed by sound scientific principles. SRA promotes holistic, watershed, and ecosystem-based problem solving in an effort to ensure that short and long term management decisions protect the area.
SRA has provided training and coordination for Smith River Adult Trout and Salmon Surveys since 2000.
