Who We Are

The Smith River Alliance is a watershed organization with offices on the Smith River, near Crescent City, California. Founded in 1980, the mission of the organization is to provide for the long-term protection, restoration and stewardship of natural resources in the Smith River watershed.

SRA efforts focus primarily in the Smith River watershed, which includes the Smith River National Recreation Area, 490 square miles of watershed land managed by the Six Rivers National Forest, Redwood National and State Parks, Lake Earl Wildlife Area, and acreage held by private landowners.

About the Smith River

Located on California's North Coast, in Del Norte County, the Smith is California’s only major un-dammed river. Its natural flows, protected habitat and lack of significant hatchery influence combine to make the Smith the premier stronghold for wild salmon and steelhead in the state.

The Smith River watershed exemplifies the rich biological diversity of the Klamath/Siskiyou region. Its floral diversity supports an assemblage of mammals, birds, reptiles and fish including black bear, mountain lion, wolverine, northern spotted owl, endangered Del Norte salamander and tailed frog, chinook salmon, coho salmon, steelhead trout and coastal cutthroat trout.
